Friday night we went to a highly anticipated A Hawk and a Hacksaw live show at the Independent in San Francisco. It was about a year ago we had seen them at the same venue, so we had our expectations set.
Unfortunately, we were not that impressed with the show and do not have much to say about it. The highlight of the show was when the group all came into the audience and played a few songs. It had everyone around them engaged and happy. But besides that, the audience was rather dead and immobile. I do not know if it was because everyone was out of it or what, but for us, we were expecting to hear a decent amount of old songs. We were unfamiliar with their new album so all we could do was dance amongst each other and take it for what it was worth.
We did happen to meet A Hawk and a Hacksaw afterwords and they were all really friendly people. They even were nice enough to sign their album for me. I got the setlist too, so I will be sure to post in the next day or two.

So yeah, I have been absent from the blogging world for a bit and for this I apologize, but when you do stuff like it for work everyday, blogging can become less entertaining and more monotonous. I saw the band Mother Mother from Canada (I believe Vancouver) at Cafe du Nord a little over a month ago, and I am ashamed I haven’t said anything sooner. Then again I still haven’t written anything about SXSW, but whatever, better luck next year.
Mother Mother rocked. I think they sound like the Pixies, which very few bands are capable of acheiving such a pure yet diversified sound and crisply harmonized vocals. I think this is what the band is most noted for, their vocals. Two girlies and one booyeee, perfectly harmonizing three distinctly awesome voices, so good one reviewer even stated Queen would be proud to hear. Freddie Murcury? Really. Now that is one fine complemint.
I would check out their song Body of Years, and of course the rest of the album. I bought it and it’s super.

It has been a Fillmore extravaganza! With DeVotchKa, Lykke Li and Andrew Bird all within two weeks of one another, I thought I might just wet my pants. The music, the lights, the fellow melody lovers… it was better than a good cheese (and I do love my cheese). Lykke Li, the sweet little Swede she is, blew me away with her precious scratchy voice… i didn’t know the word “fuck” could sound innocent and kind. Listening to her on Mp3, I figured she would sing and speak quietly, but that voice does carry. A band is a band and Ms. Li Lykke Z. doesn’t make it all…. The entire group is masterful (and sexy; swear I’m not a vanity whore).
Their openers, Wildbirds and Peacedrums, were an incredible and powerful duo…. The whole even was a smilefest.
At the end of the show, being the chotchkie-grubbing fool I am, I was more than enthused to buy a vinyl from the openers (awesome album art I should add) and take a poster to hang on my overcrowded walls. For those of you who have yet to experience the SF Fillmore’s grace, the venue hands out a poster to EVERYONE at the end of most every show. They have done this since the the early years in rock’s golden age. I only wish I could have been there for Jefferson Airplane. So to all of you who don’t know the Fillmore and haven’t heard Lykke Li…. go there.

I never knew such an amazing performance was able to be beat! After seeing DeVotchKa for the first time I was kind of depressed, because I truly convinced myself that no show would ever compare…. but to my astonishment, the incredible Denver natives really out did themselves.
I was front and center, able to see their beautiful dancers’ every move, nearly feeling the air from Hagerman’s accordion on my face. Lead vocalist Nick Urata was all debonair in a dapper dark coat, sided by Jeanie Schroder’s blue-lit tuba. The whole time I was smiling. Anyone who saw me probably thought I had taken a mind-altering pill, but when you see DeVotchKa, there is no need for such sense enhancers.

I got the set list and I’ll be happy to post a pic of it. Great night, GREAT NIGHT.

I finally saw Yeasayer last night. It is one of the best shows I have ever seen. My girlfriend and I got there 15 minutes after the doors opened. There were probably only another 20 people at Bimbos by this time. I went up and took some pictures of the stage (first photo below). It was cool that they had both bands’ equipment set up: the opening act, Icy Demons, and headliner Yeasayer. There were a few interesting instruments on stage and it gave off a feeling that tonight was going to be special and that great music was going to be performed.

Yeasayer stage pre-concert
Icy Demons were pretty funky. They had recently set out with Yeasayer on tour. The Chicago band, in my opinion, surprised the small audience and had everyone dancing and jolly. At about the time they were finishing up, Bimbos was filling up. Even by show time, the crowd was never as big as the Minus the Bear concert. I liked that. It’s fun to have a packed house and crowd which which to experience great music, but I don’t enjoy being bumped and not being able to see.
Yeasayer kicked ass! There is no other way to say it. I try to refrain from using profanity on the site, but that is what just comes out onto my blog. The lead singer put on a great show on the keyboards. My favorite is guitarist Anand Wilder, who has a classic rock style. I just knew he was out of Brooklyn. He has the look which us Brooklyn natives can spot a mile away. I remember him most from the video of their song 2080, which happens to be my favorite song by Yeasayer.
It’s a guarantee that I write a post about that song, as that is my favorite song now and has been for the past few months. I fell in love with Yeasayer after seeing the video on this awesome French music video site.
